Where stars are forged

Four hundred light-years from Earth, the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is the closest stellar nursery to our solar system. Inside its vast fields of gas and dust, gravity quietly draws matter together until something ignites. New stars — hundreds of them — are taking shape there right now, hidden in the clouds until they burn bright enough to emerge on their own.
